11 April 2022

We are pleased to announce that the project, coordinated by Asst. Prof. H. Emrah Karaoğuz from the Department of International Relations, entitled “An Analysis of the Sport’s Role in Turkey’s Foreign Relations and Global/Regional Image and an Analysis of Prominent Sports Diplomacy Strategies in the World,” has been funded by TÜBİTAK 1001 Sports Research Call.

The project will contribute to the literature with the bibliometric analysis to be carried out for the first time in sports diplomacy. With the research to be carried out, three aspects will be contributed to the literature:

(1) empirical contribution by examining the Turkey-Greece 2008 European Football Championship joint candidacy process for the first time,

(2) Turkey-Armenia and Turkey-Greece relations with an in-depth study of “football diplomacy” in Turkey, a contribution to the instrumentalization of sports in foreign relations;

(3) academic contribution by analyzing Turkey’s positioning in sports-related news and reflected in the foreign press using the qualitative content analysis method.

We congratulate our faculty member and wish him success.
